The popular comic is working in collaboration with fairtrade nut company Liberation on the new range of peanuts that will carry his branding. Harry Hill is not set to make any money of this endevour into the celebrity endorsed fairtrade food market himself as he wants the focus to be on helping the smallholder farmers in Latin America and Africa, which is a noble endevour.

Liberation which was launched at the end of last year made £1.6 million in its first operating year and set to double this year. The company runs purely to benefit the developing country farmers and their families with their entire product portfolio being focused on Fairtrade.

Beewyched is known as the UK’s leading fair-trade beer and available in most well known supermarkets, such as Morrisons, Asda, Sainsbury, and Waitrose, as well as many leading independent retailers across the UK.

Beewyched was first brewed in 2007 based on a Chilean Fairtrade Honey recipe, Malawian fairtrade sugar, and English pale ale malts and challenger hops. Its tapping into an increasing market of UK consumers interested in speciality beers and a different taste.

For those of you who were not aware of this, Honey beers are a descendent of the ancient Viking drink called ‘mead’ which consisted of fermented honey and water.

If you are a fan of the fizzy cola drink, but not to happy about the fair trade credentials of the the Coca Cola and Pepsi of the world. Then a new product is here to save your day, it is the first Fairtrade labeled Cola in the UK and it is called UBUNTU.

The word Ubuntu apparently means something like ‘humanity’ or ‘fellow feeling’. The cola is made from fairtrade sugar from Malawi and Zambia, and the Ubuntu Trading Company has also committed to return a share of its profits to the sugar farmers to help them develop their communities and their production further.

Currently UBUNTU Cola is available from selected cafes and restaurants around the country (see their website), but from the 12th of June you can also order it online from here…

We look forward to testing it, and will come back with a review once we had a chance to taste it.

According to a new report from The Fairtrade Foundation in the UK they want to see the market for Fairtrade products increase to £2bn a year by 2012. That is 4 times the current level, so we can safely call that very expansive plans.

The plan also talks about how they want to increase awareness for the Fairtrade brand among the UK consumer, a brand that saw a huge increase in awareness in the last year. One of the expected big growth areas are within Fairtrade bakery products, as bakers use many Fairtrade products, including sugar and cocoa. They mention among others Devine Chocolate move into baked goods category with chocolate chip cookies, muffins and brownies made from 70% dark Fairtrade chocolate.

We wish the Fairtrade Foundation good luck with their growth plans.
