Say it with Fairtrade flowers this Easter
By admin • Mar 17th, 2008 • Category: fairtrade providerAnother product area where we are starting to see a bigger influence on Fairtrade is the flower market. These days you can get fair trade flowers from most of the big name online flower stores as well as from the big department stores like John Lewis etc.
According to Fairtrade.org.uk the foundation’s flower category now totals 75 licensed products, representing a 71% increase since 2006 to over 83 million stems sold in 2007. The range of flower types now available has expanded from roses to include lisianthus, sunflowers, gypsophillia, alstroemeria and ruscus as well as recent additions of carnations and lilies. To achieve Fairtrade standard, flower farms have to commit to basic labour and environmental standards.
So this Easter why not say it with Fairtrade flowers

Although I wholeheartedly believe in fair trade flowers, it would be nice to see smaller company names advertised, not just the likes of John Lewis. Speaking to a florists in Woodstock, Oxford, she was saying how people buy their flowers when they shop at the Co-op or Sainsbury’s etc as it is convenient. As a result, their trading levels have dropped substantially and have to rely on Christmas, Mothers Day, Easter and Weddings to see them through the year. Try not to forget local florists and remember that they too have online services! Even better, pick up the phone and speak to them to design one specifically for you! Let’s not see florists diminish into non-existence, too….
Hi Claire,
Thanks for the post back, and i agree with you that it would be a shame if the smaller flower shops and other corner shops disappear under the thump of the larger ones. Happy to promote the smaller ones, so if you know of any, please forward me the details and i will have a look.
