Fairtrade tea to be served at McDonalds in UK

By admin • Apr 6th, 2008 • Category: Fairtrade tea and coffee, fairtrade

According to the Telegraph there are some positive changes happening at McDonalds in the UK.

Earlier McDonalds changed their range of coffee over to Rainforest Alliance Products in their 1,200 UK outlets, and now they have done the same with their tea, switching from Tetley tea over to the Rainforest Alliance certified PG Tips which is owned by consumer giants Unilever.

Fairtrade tea and coffee is not the only change at McDonalds that is focused on the environment, as they are also running their fleet of 155 delivery vehicles on cooking oil recycled from their stores. They have also switched over to organic milk, free range eggs and less salt in the food.

These changes have come in place following research last year indicating that burger chains are not doing enough for the environment.

  1. McDonald’s UK has indeed switched to certified sustainable sourcing in both their tea and coffee offering. But you are wrong to describe either as fairtrade. Rainforest Alliance certification is a separate certifcation programe quite distinct from fairtrade. Rainforest Alliance certification is a sustainable farming programme. Fairtrade focuses on poverty alleviation. You can find out more about the Rainforest Alliance here www.rainforest-alliance.org

  2. Thank you for the clarification on this. Will make sure to check my sources better next time.
