One more borough and London gets Fairtrade status
By admin • Apr 17th, 2008 • Category: fairtradeNewham is the latest borough of London to get fairtrade status, thereby taking London to the brink of becoming the worlds largetst fairtrade city. All London needs now is one more borough to get Fairtrade status.
London has come far since the early days of 2003 when Croydon became the first borough to receive fairtrade status. Today there are 16 fairtrade boroughs in London. Just one more and London can join the likes of Edinburgh, Birmingham, Leeds and Cardiff as UK fairtrade cities, and London will also be the worlds largest fairtrade city.
It is the Fairtrade Foundation that grants fair trade status to boroughs.
Some boroughs are in no rush to achieve fairtrade status though, as the likes of Chelse and Westminister sees fair trade as something that should be chosen on a personal level and not something that the borough should force upon its citizens, which also makes sense.
