Cadbury Dairy Milk is about to become the first UK mainstream chocolate bar to go fairtrade as Cadbury has pledged to increase their purchases of Fairtrade cocoa from small farmers in Ghana, helping support a sustainable and developing economy for the cocoa farmers.

One of the most loved chocolate bars in the UK, Cadburys Dairy Milk, has announced that they are going to become part of the fair trade movement by becoming the first UK mainstream chocolate bar to raise the Fairtrade logo sales banner (Greenplanet.net).

Cadbury has pledged to double the amount of cocoa bought from small farmers in developing countries, primarily Ghana, under the sustainable farming scheme, which means they have committed to pay the farmers the “Fairtrade premium” of £105 a tonne above market prices.

As part of their bigger plan to turn all their chocolate brands over to fairtrade they have committed to buying 10,000 tonnes of Fairtrade cocoa, trippling the certified sales from Ghana, and helping thousands of small cocoa farmers.

So keep an eye out for the new fairtrade Dairy Milk bars at a store near you.

23rd of February to the 8th March the UK will see an increased focus on Fairtrade from a wide range of retailers and companies as Fairtrade Fortnight is back to increase awareness about fair trade and the work being done to improve trading standards for producers around the world.

The theme for this years Fairtrade Fortnight is; Make it happen. Choose Fairtrade.

The focus on fair trade is more important than ever as the world is struggling through tougher economic climate and many producers will seek to cut cost were possible. It is therefore important that we as customers keep supporting fairtrade to ensure that farmers and producers around the world gets fair price for their produce/work, and a chance to develop themselves and their communities to improve their overall living quality, like we here in the UK are used to.

Fairtrade Fortnight creates a great opportunity for retailers and companies to further tell their customers about their work for fairtrade, and the fairtrade options amongst their product portfolio. There are currently over 4,500 products in the UK market bearing the Fairtrade mark. Some of the new products expected to start bearing the Fairtrade mark in 2009 are olive oil and cosmetics.

We encourage all our readers to support Fairtrade and Fairtrade Fortnight this coming month.

You can read more about Fairtrade Fortnight at fairtrade.org.uk

Leading coffeshop chain Starbucks has recently released the good news that in the future all coffee in their stores will be 100% fairtrade in a move that we are sure will be highly welcomed by both their customers and the third world coffee farmers.

Leading coffeshop chain Starbucks has recently released the good news that in the future all coffee in their stores will be 100% fairtrade in a move that we are sure will be highly welcomed by both their customers and the third world coffee farmers.

It is not long ago since the coffee chain originating out of Seattle announced that qurterly profits were down 90% and that they were closing around 700 stores in the US and Australia after years of impressive growth and expansion. In the UK, Starbucks opened over 100 new stores in the last year, but expect to see a slowdown here as well.

Starbucks have long prided themselves in their work to make conditions better for their farmers and to give them more fair trading conditions, although they have also received a lot of bad press from fairtrade organizations for not doing more, something that comes with the teritory when you are the number 1 in the market.

It is expected that the announcement from Starbucks to make all their espresso based coffee drinks 100% fairtrade will have a good impact on over 100,000 coffee farmers throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America, guaranteeing them a fair price for their coffee beans and help develop their communities.

We congratulate Starbucks on making this move, and look forward to sipping our fairtrade coffee in one of their many stores around the UK.
